Many people, new to caring for orchids, worry too much about pruning. There really is no need, it is simple and if you follow a few guidelines and do not cut too much you will have healthy plants you can be proud of. Unlike some other plants, orchids only require pruning from time to time and for some types, pruning is not even necessary. Before you begin take a moment to clean your shears with a mild bleach solution to avoid any infection issues – orchids are prone to attack from viruses and fungus so hygiene is important.
We prune some types of orchids to encourage and enhance flowering. Depending upon the type of orchid you are growing you can cut down the dying flower stalks, after flowering, to about 3cm from the base. This will leave a growing point for the next season’s flowers. Always wait until the flower stalks wilt after the flowers have all died. Check individual type for any special requirements.
Removing dead or dying parts of the plant and any debris around the plant is basic plant health care. It is very important to cut away unhealthy parts of your orchid before they can spread infection to the rest of the plant. Keep a constant check on this but with special care in the dormant period when disease is more common. Put in place a simple orchid care schedule and keep a close watch on your plants.

Orchids don’t often need pruning but if your plant is becoming a messy shape it is perfectly fine to tidy up with the secateurs. This also has the benefit of encouraging strong re-growth and renewed vigour – particularly with older plants.
