It is one of the favorite grasses of gardeners because of its beautiful, sharp foliage that gives it the appearance of a porcupine–hence the name. This grass grows in clumps and can get to as high as 8 feet tall and 3 feet wide, so if you are planning to put this type of ornamental grass in your garden make sure that you have enough space.

This ornamental grass originated in Eastern Asia, particularly in China, Korea, and Japan. Porcupine grass is one of those grasses that is not sensitive, which is why it is so easy to grow this type of grass. All it needs is to be placed under full sunlight and to get regular watering. As long as these two needs are met you can be sure that your porcupine grasses will grow well. If your garden is shady this grass can also grow, but it may need a little extra care. This grass is one of the ornamental grasses that is extremely flexible and can adapt to almost all kinds of weather temperatures and conditions. In this way it is similar to monkey grass or one of the liriopes.

Aside from this it does not grow rapidly, thereby making it easy to maintain. It will not just pop up in every part of the garden so you don’t have to worry about constantly pulling out this grass in areas where you don’t want it to be. Even if you place these plants in narrow areas they will not clamor for more space. As for the propagation, you can use either seedlings or a separation method. It will propagate well with both of these methods but if you don’t want to wait for a long time for the grass to grow you can just use the separation method.

One of the main features of this ornamental grass is that it is deer resistant. With this feature this plant is ideal for placing in corners so that it can be protected from the deer. Deer mean no harm but since they love to eat plants your garden can be ruined if you don’t put deer resistant plants around the perimeter. Porcupine grass is also pest and disease resistant, which is why even if you put it beside your most precious plants you don’t have to worry about it being infected. Garden owners usually pair this ornamental grass with plants like Mullein, Aster, Anemone, Japanese Rose, dwarf mondo grass and other plants that bloom in autumn as the color of the porcupine grass blends well with these kinds of plants. You can also mix and match it with other colorful flowering plants to make your garden more beautiful.
